Ike Prompts Wind Advisory For South Fla.

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. -- A wind advisory has been issued for Palm Beach County as Hurricane Ike passes over Cuba headed on a course for the Gulf of Mexico.

Ike was about 400 miles away from Palm Beach County late Monday morning, but the storm was expected to bring windy conditions to the area, prompting a wind advisory until 2 a.m. Tuesday. The wind advisory was also in effect for Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Monroe County authorities canceled evacuation orders for residents of the Florida Keys at noon Monday, although a tropical storm warning remained in effect for the island chain.

There were no other watches or warnings for mainland South Florida.

Ike is the fifth named storm of the Atlantic hurricane season. The storm is currently over Cuba and expected to intensify into a Category 3 storm as it passes into the Gulf of Mexico before making landfall somewhere in Louisiana or Texas.
