WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- Late Tuesday afternoon, a lightning bolt hit close enough to a Loxahatchee man to send him to the hospital.
The bolt hit the ground on 50th Street, north of Loxahatchee.
Sam Barmatov was swimming in a pool and had just gotten out of the water when the lightning strike hit.
Barmatov was knocked unconscious, but quickly came back as fire rescue crews started working on him. That is when he asked for a cigarette.
Instead, paramedics took him to St. Mary's Medical Center.
His injuries were not life threatening.
Stay tuned to Eyewitness News 25 for an upcoming report on June 20 at 5:30 p.m., when Mike Lyon will introduce viewers to lightning strike survivors, provide tips on protecting yourself from getting struck, and show you why Florida is the lightning capital of the country.
